Student Expectations - Grading
Math is a very linear discipline whose skill sets build upon each other. As a result, a student must be consistent in his or her approach to the subject. Bottom Line: Homework must be completed and checked, EVERY DAY.
Prior to first day of class
You must enter 6th grade knowing your multiplication facts. If you don't, learn them. Flash cards are only $1 at Wal-Mart and there are a huge number of online multiplication "games" that you can access.
For every class
Each student is expected to bring the following to every class:
1) Your homework, fully completed and checked (odd answers are in the back of the book, you should check all problems with a calculator and with another student). You should walk through my door each day, knowing your work is done correctly.
2) Your planner - make sure you fill it out correctly each day.
3) Paper.
4) Pencils - It would be wise to bring more than one.
5) Your math textbook.
6) A red pen to grade your papers - It would be wise to bring more than one.
Students are expected to show work on every problem. I will assume that answers not accompanied by work we're copied from another source and will not accept them as your own work.
Students are to use the restrooms before and after class, not during (exceptions made if it's an emergency).
For the school year
Students are expected to complete every assignment on time. If a student completes each assignment on time and checks their work nightly, he or she will easily master the 6th grade mathematics curriculum and be thoroughly prepared for 7th grade math.
Grading Procedures
A passing grade of 70 or better is required on every assignment. If a student fails an assignment they must redo the problems they've missed until they achieve a passing score. Once brought up to passing standards, the assignment will be scored a 70%.
A late assignment (not turned in at the beginning of class) will have 10 points taken off per day.
If a student is missing more than one assignment, he or she will be required to attend study hall during special areas to make up the work. If a student has continued problems with missing assignments, he or she may be pulled from his special area classes or required to stay after school.
Continued Failures in Completing or Checking Work
By the third six-week grading period, students should understand that they need to have their homework completed and checked every night. Failure to turn in assignments on-time or papers that have more than two odd answers wrong (from book assignments where the odd answer is in the back of the book) will result in the following writing assignments (10 times each):
Missing Homework
I'm sorry I didn't complete my homework assignment. I know I need to complete my homework, in order to fully understand the material you teach. I will make a greater effort to complete my homework assignments on time.
Not Checking Ones Work
I'm sorry I didn't check my work as I have been constantly reminded to do. It was irresponsible of me and prevents me from learning from my mistakes. I will make a greater effort to check my work on future assignments.
If the writing assignment is not completed for the next day they will be doubled. On the third day the student will be placed in ISS until he or she has completed 30 sets.
